High Tunnel (Hoop House)

A High Tunnel System, commonly called a "hoop house" is a plastic-covered greenhouse, which is used to grow vegetable's throughout the year. This project is located in Forrest City. The High tunnel will protect plants from severe weather and allow this project to extend its growing seasons – growing earlier into the spring, later into the fall, and sometimes, year-round. And because high tunnels prevent direct rainfall from reaching plants, this particular project will use precise tools like drip irrigation to efficiently deliver water and nutrients to plants. High tunnels also offer a greater ability to control pests and can even protect plants from pollen and pesticide drift.

Hoop houses are emerging as vital structures for Arkansas farmers, extending the growing season and protecting crops from unpredictable weather. These curved frames covered with plastic create an ideal microclimate for vegetables, fruits, and flowers, enabling earlier planting and later harvesting. They also promote soil health through sustainable practices like no-till farming. Additionally, hoop houses foster community engagement, offering educational workshops and supporting Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. As their popularity rises, hoop houses represent a sustainable solution to local agricultural challenges, enhancing food production and strengthening community ties in Arkansas.
